Donate your Kaffara Expiation for Broken Fast in Ramadan

In Islam, Muslims fast during the month of Ramadan. Fasting during Ramadan means abstinence from all food or drink and intercourse. It should be understood that intercourse during the day in Ramadan, for one who is fasting and is not travelling, is a grave sin. Anyone that is in this situation must repent by praying a great deal for forgiveness, regretting it, acknowledging that it is a sin, and feeling sad for having done it. One should also do a lot of acts of obedience and worship, and resolve not to go back to that sin. This results in five consequences:

  1. Incurring sin
  2. Rendering the fast invalid
  3. Obligation to refrain from eating and drinking for the rest of the day
  4. Obligation to make up the broken fast after Ramadan
  5. Obligation of offering kaffara expiation

Abu Hurairah narrated that: A man came and said: “O Messenger of Allah; I am ruined!” He said: “What has ruined you?” He said: “I had sexual relations with my wife during Ramadan.” He said: “Are you able to free a slave?” He said, “No.” He said: “Then are you able to fast for two consecutive months?” He said, “No.” He said: “Then are you able to feed sixty needy people?” He said, “No.” He said: “Sit.” So he sat. A big basket full of dates was brought to the Prophet, and he said: “Give it in charity.” So he said: “There is no one needier than us between its two mountains.” So the Prophet laughing until his pre-molar teeth appeared, and he said: “Then take it to feed your family.”

Islamic Schools of Thought

There are varying opinions on when the Kaffara Expiation is required. We recommend you contact your local scholar to determine if you are required to pay the Kaffara Expiation for deliberately breaking or missed fasts or broken oaths, as the rulings can be different for each situation.

How Much and How Should I Pay the Kaffarah Expiation?

Only if you are unable to fulfill the first two options of the kaffara expiation, we recommend paying $10 for one meal which would be a total of $600 for 60 people.
